Pluralistic ignorance of campus norms. Changes on college campuses and movements such as MeToo have highlighted problem behaviors such as sexual assault. Many problems and behaviors related to and including sexual assault can be attributed to misperceptions of norms and peer beliefs, which can lead individuals to act in ways they would not normally condone. It is unclear whether MeToo or other changes over time may have affected perceptions of norms and their relation to problematic behaviors that perpetuate sexual assault. There were three goals for the current study. My first goal was to assess the difference among perceived norms and actual norms in a current sample of college students on several factors related to sexual assault. My second goal was to evaluate whether the difference between perceived norms and actual norms has changed from previous years, based on comparisons to previous research.
In social psychology , pluralistic ignorance is a situation in which a majority of group members privately reject a norm, but go along with it because they assume, incorrectly, that most others accept it. Pluralistic ignorance is a bias about a social group, held by the members of that social group. Pluralistic ignorance may help to explain the bystander effect. Prentice and Miller found that, on average, private levels of comfort with drinking practices on campus were much lower than the perceived average. In the case of men, they found a shifting of private attitudes toward this perceived norm , a form of cognitive dissonance.

Pluralistic Ignorance and Alcohol Use on Campus: The Power of the Social Norm
In light of the myriad accounting and corporate ethics scandals of the early 21st century, many corporate leaders and management scholars believe that ethics education is an essential component in business school education. To address this gap in the ethics education literature the present study examines the influence of an underlying social cognitive error, called pluralistic ignorance. We believe that if pluralistic ignorance is reduced, the result will be more effective business ethics education programs. Eighty undergraduate management students participated in this longitudinal study, and a mixed-model ANOVA revealed that the reduction of pluralistic ignorance due to an ethics education program designed to reduce pluralistic ignorance resulted in higher personal ethical standards over the course of a semester, when compared to a class that did not receive a formal ethics education program as part of their course. We discuss the implications of pluralistic ignorance in training business ethics and ethics education.
A mirrored set of items asked about what they believe their teammates would do in the same situations. From these responses, perceived and true team norms were calculated. Among both male and female athletes, perceived norms were significantly less supportive of sexual assault prevention than were true norms.

Prentice and Dale T. Four studies examined the relation between college students ' own attitudes toward alcohol use and their estimates of the attitudes of their peers. AH studies found widespread evidence of pluralistic ignorance: Students believed that they were more uncomfortable with campus alcohol practices than was the average student. Study 2 demonstrated this perceived self-other difference also with respect to one's friends. Study 3 tracked attitudes toward drinking over the course of a semester and found gender differences in response to perceived deviance: Male students shifted their attitudes over time in the direction of what they mistakenly believed to be the norm, whereas female students showed no such attitude change. Study 4 found that students ' perceived deviance corre-lated with various measures of campus alienation, even though that deviance was illusory.

Health and Wellness aims to empower students in making informed decisions around alcohol and drug use through education and alternative programming events. We work in partnership with many campus departments to provide students with safe, alcohol-free social options throughout the quarter. With top rankings and multiple Nobel Laureates, UCSB is an elite university and a global leader in research and the sciences. However, there is a widespread and misleading stereotype that this top University is just another school with too many parties and too little serious work. This perception further perpetuates a normative college lifestyle of partying and negatively impacts our campus culture and reputation. At every University, student well being is dependent on choices that lead to healthier and happier lives, and informed decisions to prevent alcohol and drug misuse.
