Basics of Qualitative Research Techniques and Procedures for Developing Grounded Theory

Grounded theory is a systematic methodology that has been largely, but not exclusively, applied to qualitative research conducted by social scientists. The methodology involves the construction of hypotheses and theories through the collecting and analysis of data. The methodology contrasts with the hypothetico-deductive model used in traditional scientific research. A study based on grounded theory is likely to begin with a question, or even just with the collection of qualitative data. As researchers review the data collected, ideas or concepts become apparent to the researchers. As more data are collected, and re-reviewed, codes can be grouped into higher-level concepts, and then into categories.

Grounded theory GT is a very crucial qualitative tool in research inquiry. It embraces systematic, inductive, and comparative inquiry method to construct a theory. GT is mostly appropriate to investigate organizational phenomena, which involves a change process. In this chapter, the authors focus on the emergence of GT as a research inquiry tool with the focus how GT evolves from classis grounded theory to constructivist ground theory. In the detailed method of GT, a focus is given on coding method along with theoretical sampling and theoretical saturation points. Despite being a powerful technique, GT has drawn a number of criticisms.

In this chapter we introduce grounded theory methodology and methods. In particular we clarify which research questions are appropriate for a grounded theory study and give an overview of the main techniques and procedures, such as the coding procedures, theoretical sensitivity, theoretical sampling, and theoretical saturation. We further discuss the role of theory within grounded theory and provide examples of studies in which the coding paradigm of grounded theory has been altered in order to be better suitable for applications in mathematics education. In our exposition we mainly refer to grounded theory techniques and procedures according to Strauss and Corbin Basics of qualitative research: Grounded theory procedures and techniques, Sage Publications, Thousand Oaks, , but also include other approaches in the discussion in order to point out the particularities of the approach by Strauss and Corbin. With their focus on theory development, they dissociate themselves from mere theory verification and the concomitant separation of the context of theory discovery and the context of theory justification, which was the prominent scientific method at that time. With their approach to qualitative research, they also go beyond the mere description of phenomena.

Grounded theory

In 'The Discovery of Grounded Theory' was published and was quickly added to reading lists and embraced by social researchers. However, what grounded theory is and what it should be is contested within social research, with a rift between the founding authors complicating matters. Grounded theory has not been immune to the debates surrounding the status of truth and knowledge and the position of the researched and researcher and it has been interpreted and reinterpreted in light of them. Glaser and Strauss suggested in their original text that grounded theory was not a static prescriptive strategy but was open to interpretation and development. This development has taken place and has resulted in competing perspectives on the strategy; these competing perspectives will be introduced in the presentation on 3 March Much of the success of grounded theory was due to it being able to answer a number of questions about qualitative research that previous texts had failed to answer, namely, how to start the research identifying area of interest, avoiding theoretical preconceptions and using theoretical sensitivity , how to do it through analytical procedures and sampling strategies and how to stop when theoretical saturation is reached.

Jump to navigation. Grounded Theory is a qualitative research approach that attempts to develop theories of understanding based on data from the real world. Unlike some other forms of qualitative inquiry, grounded theory attempts to go beyond rich description which it also strives for to an explanation of the phenomena of interest. The second key word is grounded. For example, if one wished to derive a grounded theory about the effects of childhood abuse on adult functioning, one would gather many kinds of data from persons who had grown up amid child abuse, and would build the theory of how it affects adult development on the information obtained from those people. The primary tools of discovery are interviews and observations. However, grounded theory goes beyond the descriptive and interpretive goals and is aimed at building theories.

Theoretical approaches

Grounded theory is a well-known methodology employed in many research studies. Qualitative and quantitative data generation techniques can be used in a grounded theory study. Grounded theory sets out to discover or construct theory from data, systematically obtained and analysed using comparative analysis. While grounded theory is inherently flexible, it is a complex methodology. Thus, novice researchers strive to understand the discourse and the practical application of grounded theory concepts and processes.

An Introduction to Grounded Theory with a Special Focus on Axial Coding and the Coding Paradigm

Two articles in this launch issue of the journal explore the patient experience of haemophilia. To set the context, Martin Bedford explains the grounded theory method, and gives a brief overview of how and when it might be used in haemophilia research.

An introduction to grounded theory

Grounded theory is a commonly used research methodology. There are three primary approaches to grounded theory in nursing research: those espoused by Glaser, Strauss and Corbin, and Charmaz. All three approaches use similar procedures, yet there are important differences among them, which implies that researchers need to make careful choices when using grounded theory. Researchers new to grounded theory need to find the most appropriate approach that fits their research field, topic, and researcher position. In this article, we compare the three grounded theory approaches. Practical aspects of grounded theory approaches should match the information processing styles and analytical abilities of the researcher and the intended use of the theory. Grounded theory is a research approach that appeals to nurses for several reasons.

Basics of Qualitative Research: Techniques and Procedures for Developing Grounded Theory
