Noted for its integration of real-world data and case studies, this text offers sound coverage of the theoretical aspects of mathematical statistics. The authors demonstrate how and when to use statistical methods, while reinforcing the calculus that students have mastered in previous courses. Throughout the Fifth Edition, the authors have added and updated examples and case studies, while also refining existing features that show a clear path from theory to practice.

This is a very nice introduction to probability and statistics. The authors do a great job of introducing both simple and complex concepts. A nice feature of this book is the use of some more advanced mathematics than is typically seen in an introductory course like this one. Readers unfamiliar with this book can see what others have said here. To learn this material as well as possible I'm working through the book's exercises and wrote up solutions as I went along.

Verified Purchase. This was a great text, I wish I had purchased it rather than renting so I could refer to it in the future.

The sections map well to the problems, and the examples and case studies are really helpful. This book is terrible from the way that it is written to the way that the author uses obscure terminology and poor wording. If you have to read this for a Ph. Program as I did you may be better off dropping out of classes and going to live among the wolves in the forest using this book for sustenance and fuel through the darkest nights of winter than remaining in a class that uses this nightmare come reality of a book which explains absolutely nothing and expects you to understand what the author meant perfectly 3 chapters before.

Not stellar. Purchase if you must. There are very few books that leave me scratching my head this much, and this is one of them. I have lots of calculus under my belt, and I love it. Statistics is an equally interesting interesting area of mathematics, and I can really see myself applying it when I begin my engineering career. This book, however, makes it difficult for me to grasp even the most simple of concepts, because the author spends so little time actually defining them.

He will also often switch up on notation without actually explaining what any of the variables mean. Maybe right now you're thinking "No biggie, I'll just buy the solutions manual!

The solutions manual offers minimal explanation for many problems. While some of the problems are explained sufficiently, some are not. And the kicker? Some of the problems make references to theorems that don't even exist in the book! Even more don't even answer the question that was asked in the first place! It is very obvious that whoever performed the final review of this text, before sending it to the press, did not take the time to make sure a first-time statistics student would be able to learn from this book.

If this was sold as a review text, I wouldn't even be currently reviewing it. But because this says "Introduction" in the title then, in my opinion, this qualifies as false advertisement. I don't like having my time and money wasted.

I would be more forgiving in this review were it not for the simple fact that this book is currently in its fifth edition, the first being published back in Excellently done. I have the class with Prof. Marx himself, and it is the best textbook I've ever used. Not only helpful, but candid, entertaining, and full of informative studies and anecdotes.

Statistics finally makes sense. Definitely recommend, but you've got to have your math skills sharpened. Definitely would get the student solutions manual, too, to really see how the problems are done. Great Work! One person found this helpful. I am recently retired and wanted to read a book I could afford to update myself on Mathematical Statistics.

BS degree in math long time ago. The book is great. I love the examples, they are clever and clear. Just what I need! The condition of the textbook is so bad, and I am afraid it will break apart.
