Datta-Ray, is a brilliant chronicle of how Sikkim became the 22nd state of India in the year Sikkim was ruled by Chogyal Palden Thondup Namgyal, at the time when it was taken over as the twenty second Indian state. The author himself was a close friend of the 12th Chogyal, but the book details the story with an unassuming tone of a brilliant writer.
Smash and Grab: Annexation of Sikkim
Every frame is voluptuous, Ray shows us sweeping landscapes otherwise only found in the paintings of Caspar David Friedrich, the cacophony of children going to school, impossibly quaint market squares, the mesmeric whirling of prayer bells and even a bizarrely gorgeous long take of a man trying to tame a wild horse. While this certainly sounds like an Orientalist wet dream, the cinematic hypnotism that Ray executes makes you fleetingly amnesiac about all those well-intentioned lectures on Edward Said in college. Originally, Ray had his trepidations about doing the documentary, but he eventually acquiesced after Hope Cook the American wife of the Chogyal of Sikkim, Palden Thondhup Namgyal convinced him to take on the project, expressing her admiration for his movies. Ray devoted quite a bit of time to the film, and while it was a commissioned project, his bewitchment about the autonomous kingdom is pretty evident in the final product. During its first private screening, the Chogyal and his Queen found some parts of the documentary objectionable and demanded a few cuts. A similar fate would meet another intrepid, genteel Bengali Sunanda K Dutta Ray, who operated from Sikkim at around the same time Ray shot his documentary there and was far more transfixed by the place.

I had an inside view being an eye witness-cum-participant in the extraordinarily exciting events of the last 12 months leading up to the merger with India. As is normal in the case of diplomats, I had made it my business to read and get briefed about Sikkim and the past role of the Political Office - this background provides the context for my remarks on the book. His book had an accidental birth as he explains in the Introduction and the Prologue. However, biases and subjectivity become increasingly evident as the writing of this book progressed - what had originally attracted his attention was a human interest story that turned into a book project about the evolving political relationship between India and the Protectorate of Sikkim which India inherited from the British till the historical anachronism of a supposedly independent Himalayan Kingdom was finally merged into the Indian Republic. The first few chapters are an easy read evoking nostalgia for anybody who has lived even for a short time in Sikkim. Much has been made of their letters being censored but given the delicate political situation such actions would have been normal in any country; no letters were destroyed or blocked from being sent or portions being excised. The fact is that no Indian agency ever thought they were worth seriously troubling.

Reading Datta-Ray, a sense of guilt and solecism emerges. It makes us believe that democratic India did to Sikkim in the s what Communist China committed in Tibet in the s—smash and grab. What more can India possibly want? Was the merger such a travesty of justice, fair play and, worse, common sense, as Datta-Ray wanted us to believe?
