The contradictions of the age are reflected in the career and achievement of Donne. The inconsistency of the Elizabethans is mirrored in the complex personality of Donne, a poet of intellectual ingenuity and theological ingenuousness. John Donne's Concept of Love-A Critical Study

His poetical works are noted for their metaphorical and sensual style and include sonnets , love poems, religious poems, Latin translations, epigrams , elegies , songs, and satires. He is also known for his sermons. Donne's style is characterised by abrupt openings and various paradoxes, ironies and dislocations. These features, along with his frequent dramatic or everyday speech rhythms, his tense syntax and his tough eloquence, were both a reaction against the smoothness [ citation needed ] of conventional Elizabethan poetry and an adaptation into English of European baroque and mannerist techniques. His early career was marked by poetry that bore immense knowledge of English society and he met that knowledge with sharp criticism [ citation needed ].

As the study clearly demonstrates, the reader's cognitive response is a vital element in the poem's expression of an inner reality. Brooks, Department of English, Stanford University. The English writer and Anglican cleric John Donne is considered now to be the preeminent metaphysical poet of his time. He was born in to Roman Catholic parents, when practicing that religion was illegal in England. His work is distinguished by its emotional and sonic intensity and its capacity to plumb the paradoxes of faith, human and divine love, and the possibility of salvation. For some 30 years after his death successive editions of his verse stamped his powerful influence upon English poets. During the Restoration his writing went out of fashion and remained so for several centuries. Throughout the 18th century, and for much of the 19th century, he was little read and scarcely appreciated.

John Donne: The Sacramentality of Sex. The presentation examines Donne's use of erotic imagery and sexual language as a means to convey a deeper spiritual meaning and religious experience in his poetry. Specifically, the paper focuses on the relationship between the body and soul and how reciprocated, mutual, 'true love', is attained through the combination of the two. In much of his work, Donne depicts love through a sacramental lens, making it more than an emotion, but a means to forming a connection with the divine. These works express Donne's belief in the earthly body as a necessary component for love, and its capabilities of drawing one closer to God. Thus, he suggests that carnal lust and a love of the Lord are not two completely contradictory notions.

THE POEMS OF. John Donne undefined is the interest which Donne's poetry still has for us, not as an whether love or devotion, begets faith, and silences the sceptical Divine Poems, keeping for his second volume the Letters to Sei'erall.

However, their stylistic similarities — in particular a kind of showy originality and linguistic immediacy — have meant that they have been clustered together for centuries.
