Bailey's works, written between and , describe a wide-ranging system of esoteric thought covering such topics as how spirituality relates to the Solar System , meditation , healing , spiritual psychology , the destiny of nations, and prescriptions for society in general. She described the majority of her work as having been telepathically dictated to her by a Master of Wisdom, initially referred to only as "the Tibetan" or by the initials "D. Though Bailey's writings differ in some respects to the Theosophy of Madame Blavatsky, they have much in common with it.

Blavatsky, H. Roerich, R. Assagioli , R. Reshape yourself through the power of your will; never let yourself be degraded by self-will.

The will is the only friend of of the Self, and the will is the only enemy of the Self. To those who have conquered themselves, the will is a friend. But it is the enemy of those who have not found the Self within them. He also wrote this about the will:. When humans evolved from the apes, however, they largely evolved out from under such instinctual controls and hence into free will.

This evolution leaves humans in the position of being either totally willful or having to seek new ways of self-control through submission to higher principles. But this still leaves us with the question of why some human beings are able to achieve such submission while others are not. Indeed, it is almost tempting to think that the problem of evil lies in the will itself. Perhaps the evil are born so inherently strong-willed that it is impossible for them ever to submit their will.

Yet I think it is characteristic of all "great" people that they are extremely strong-willed-whether their greatness be for good or for evil. The strong will-the power and authority-of Jesus radiates from the Gospels, just as Hitler's did from Mein Kampf. But Jesus' will was that of his Father, and Hitler's that of his own. The crucial distinction is between "willingness and willfulness. One of the best things I have read about "the will" or will-power in years since I read Roberto Assagioli's book: The Act of Will is found in Dan Millman's 'Everyday Enlightenment' which devotes a chapter to it.

In it he says:. Whatever your purpose, obstacles will appear between you and your goals. Willpower is like an all-terrain vehicle that drives you around the obstacles, past the stumbling blocks, over hurdles, through doubt and uncertainty, sending you onward to your destination to practice everyday enlightenment. Paraphrasing Shoma Morita, M.

When we work in line with our sense of "the higher Will of Spirit", greater inspiration and energy becomes available to us When we turn to a higher will for direction, we feel expanded, uplifted, and connected to a larger cause It is the power expressed through all the various laws of life. He who can discriminate is not so deluded.

In his 'Road less Traveled' Peck says that the primary reason people resist spiritual growth is unwillingness to make the effort, which takes will-power. In her book on the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, Alice Bailey commented on this problem among spiritual aspirants :.

This refers not so much to mental inertia for it may accompany acute mental perception as to that slothfulness of the entire lower man which prevents him from measuring up to the intellectual recognition and the inner aspiration. The aspirant has been told what he has to do, the "means of yoga" have been clear to him. He has glimpsed the ideal and is aware of the obstacles; he knows theoretically just what steps he has to take but there is no correspondence between his activity and his knowledge.

There is a gap between his aspiration and his performance. Though he longs to achieve and to know, it is too hard work to fulfill the conditions. His will is not yet strong enough to force him forwards. He permits time to slip by and does nothing. I think it can be a "defense mechanism. What also comes to mind is "fear" - we can "resist" because we fear something the unknown, failure, success? Whatever the fear, I've always thought the best advice is to "feel the fear but do it anyway" one baby-step at a time if need be :.

You can go over it, under it, or around it. But if you are ever to put fear behind you, you must walk straight through it. Once you put fear behind you, leave it there. Action breeds confidence and courage. If you want to conquer fear, do not sit home and think about it. Go out and get busy. Yet even this - taking action when we have resistance - takes will or willingness.

Apathy or depression can also come in response to high ideals -when we know our potential but feel inadequate in comparison hence the need for self-acceptance, patience, self-love, self-encouragement and encouraging each other too!

Another cause for resistance is in response to the greater spiritual energy entering our planet from various stars, our sun, etc. Everything is "speeding up" and being intensified - good and bad - with this increased energetic stimulation not to mention "information-overload"! We can lose that motivation that comes from a clear and compelling sense of purpose. We can over-analyze. The period between the New and Full Moon can also be a less energetic or even depressive period from many.

All of this can lead to a state of paralysis. Many of these issues are well understood by mainstream psychology. However, there is a whole stream of esoteric teachings on the will and its training that is largely unknown to both psychologists and the followers of mainstream Eastern religions.

It is a recurring theme among them. Here is some of the best guidance on developing the will I have found from some of these great esotericists.

But not always are we aware of this fact. HPB wrote something that can put light on this matter. Will and Desire are here considered as opposed. Thus Will is the offspring of the Divine, the God in man; Desire the motive power of the animal life. Most men live in and by desire, mistaking it for Will. But he who would achieve must separate will from desire, and make his will the ruler; for desire is unstable and ever changing, while will is steady and constant. His task is twofold; to awaken the will, to strengthen it by use and conquest, to make it absolute ruler within his body, and, parallel with this, to purify desire.

HP Blavatsky. We have here various aspects to be examined. First, HPB postulates that there exists a Will different from what we generally refer to as will, which is nothing else but desire. That Will must become awake as it is not expressed in the majority of us and therefore, is something unknown. What we generally know is desire. We must take this into consideration in order not to confuse this real Will and desire.

How can we identify the spiritual Will from the self-centred will or desire? In metaphysics and occult philosophy, Will is that which governs the manifested universes in eternity.

The will is the property of all spiritual beings and displays itself in them the more actively the more they are freed from matter. It is because men do not perfectly imagine and believe the result, that the occult arts are so uncertain, while they might he perfectly certain. Like all the rest, the Will is septenary in its degrees of manifestation. Will as an eternal principle is neither spirit nor substance but everlasting ideation.

The tendency to gravitation in a stone is as unexplainable as thought in the human brain. If matter can—no one knows why——fall to the ground, then it can also—no one knows why—-think. As soon, even in mechanics, as we trespass beyond the purely mathematical, as soon as we reach the inscrutable adhesion, gravitation, and so on, we are faced by phenomena which are to our senses as mysterious as the WILL. The abysses are sheol, hell. The abysses are our mind, our animalism, pride, lust, envy, greed, gluttony, fear, arrogance, anger, hate, jealousy.

None of that can be in the perfected stone. None of that can go to heaven. It has to be separated; it has to be purged and purified. That is what Alchemy means: to transform lead into gold. The lead is our ego. Lead is our desire.

It is a base, heavy, impure metal that sinks into hell. To be liberated from hell, you have to liberate the energy that is trapped there. That energy is sexual energy, emotional energy, intellectual energy, psychological energy that is trapped in our addictions, attachments, resistances, fears, the things we avoid, such as the truth.

Which will are you referring to, because we have many wills. Thus, in order to acquire an authentic will, here and now, we solely need to destroy the ego.

[GET] A Treatise on White Magic - Alice A. Bailey #PDF

Presenting, books on theosophy, philosophy, religion, spirituality, and more. Alice A. The "atom" emerges as a miniature but complete replica of the energy structure common to all forms of life--cosmic, planetary, human and subhuman. These energies influence the national consciousness, encouraging recognition of soul destiny and cooperation with that evolving process. The spiritual destiny of many nations and their predisposing soul and personality influences are discussed in this book. I : These two volumes contain the record of a series of personal and group instructions given to a small group of aspirants over a period of fifteen years by a Master of the Wisdom.

Last year, peer-reviewed journal The Esoteric Quarterly encouraged me to write an article based on one of the chapters. I chose the one on cosmology. I was keen not to simply copy and paste a thesis chapter; a PhD thesis proves the candidate worthy of calling themselves a scholar and is not necessarily reader-friendly. Even though my thesis was commended by examiners for the quality of its prose, as well as for its originality, in September I did a complete re-write of the cosmology chapter. It was a huge undertaking and a massive shift away from creative writing. I was amazed I could even get back into the headspace.

Alice Ann Latrobe Batemen Bailey June 16 , — December 15 , was a teacher and writer and the founder, together with husband Foster Bailey , of a spiritual movement growing out of the theosophical tradition. She was one of the first writers to use the term New Age. Alice Bailey was born to well-to-do parents in Manchester, England. Her upper middle class background was religious and also service oriented. Both parents Frederic Foster La Trobe-Batemen and Alice Hollinshead died of tuberculosis by the time Alice was eight, so she and her sister lived from then on with their grandparents in Surrey. They were educated by governesses and later attended a finishing school in London. It was during that time that she gained experience in leadership and management.

Bailey, From her conservative British background, Alice Bailey's life led her in many directions, but always in one direction--towards the time when through drastic personal experience of many kinds she had acquired a synthesis of outlook and understanding, and an absolute conviction that one divine life pervades and animates the one humanity; that the Plan for humanity requires the cooperation and service of trained and dedicated human beings intelligently informed about world affairs, in collaboration with those who form the spiritual Hierarchy, the inner government of the planet. Her life work became an integral part of this synthesis and this realization. Without in the least losing any of her very human qualities and involvement, her soul took up its commitment to her Master, and her personality provided full cooperation in the field of her accepted service. Basically her work developed as a duality--her discipleship service which included the establishment of an esoteric school; and her initially reluctant agreement to work with the Tibetan, Djwhal Khul, in the writing of a series of books presenting the next phase in the continuity of the Ageless Wisdom teaching for the present and the immediate future. An extract from the Tibetan teacher, written in briefly explains the intent of these teachings: "The books that I have written are sent out with no claim for their acceptance.
