Lifton's research for the book began in with a series of interviews with American servicemen who had been held captive during the Korean War. In addition to interviews with 25 Americans, Lifton also interviewed 15 Chinese who had fled their homeland after having been subjected to indoctrination in Chinese universities. From these interviews, which in some cases occurred regularly for over a year, Lifton identified the tactics used by Chinese communists to cause drastic shifts in one's opinions and personality and "brainwash" American soldiers into making demonstrably false assertions. The CIA theory has been evaluated scientifically in research in several contexts i. In each context, it has been shown to be ineffective in coercively changing worldviews. Because of this pattern of disconfirmation, testimony based on brainwashing theory has been opposed as unscientific by relevant professional academic organizations and repeatedly excluded from American legal trials.
Thought Reform and the Psychology of Totalism. Lifton, M. New York: W. Lifton has written a fascinating social study of the effects of 'brainwashing' in a Chinese communist prison. He uses the case method, quite new to historians apparently, which allows him to reach out from the individual experiences to the society in which they occur. The case histories fill the first part of the book.
