Political Sociology: Power and Participation in the Modern World

Political sociology studies the relation between state and society, authority and power, and the methods used to formulate social policy. Diagram the three major traditional theoretical frameworks of political sociology, plus trends in contemporary sociology. Politics is the process by which groups of people make decisions. The term is generally applied to behavior within civil governments, but politics has been observed in all human group interactions, including corporate, academic, and religious institutions. It consists of social relations involving authority or power, the regulation of political units, and the methods and tactics used to formulate and apply social policy. Political sociology was traditionally concerned with how social trends, dynamics, and structures of domination affect formal political processes. It also explored how various social forces work together to change political policies.

Various states and governments obviously exist around the world. In this context, state means the political unit within which power and authority reside. This unit can be a whole nation or a subdivision within a nation. Thus the nations of the world are sometimes referred to as states or nation-states , as are subdivisions within a nation, such as California, New York, and Texas in the United States. Government means the group of persons who direct the political affairs of a state, but it can also mean the type of rule by which a state is run. Another term for this second meaning of government is political system , which we will use here along with government.

Power (social and political)

The concept of political sociology is the extended form of sociology which studies exclusively the relationship between the ruler or the state and the citizens and also the relationship among the citizens in a state. He also made it abundantly clear that an understanding of the nature and implications of political system is not possible without a perception of the play of social and economic forces in society. In his view, if population exceeds an optimum number, social cohesion would be considerably weakened. Part II focuses on the formation, transitions, and regime structure of the state. As a result, the citizens are able to enjoy maximum political freedom.

International Political Sociology IPS based on the famous French philosopher Michel Foucault, offers a different lens to see global politics and explain it. Such criticism, in my view, runs counter to scientific innovation and creativity. In fact, a similar criticism may be made against Marxism as well. In this respect, the main argument of this paper is that the terminological riches of the Foucaldian philosophy and its application to global politics promise fresh contributions to the IR discipline and the study of global politics. Given the debate on the need to broaden and deepen the IR areas of interests, the Foucauldian IR may offer some new perspectives and tools to that end as well. Having noted these views, I now turn to analyze what IPS has to offer to the study of global politics, terminologically, methodologically, and substantively.

Participatory democracy

Participatory democracy or participative democracy emphasizes the broad participation of constituents in the direction and operation of political systems. Etymological roots of democracy Greek demos and kratos imply that the people are in power and thus that all democracies are participatory. However, participatory democracy tends to advocate more involved forms of citizen participation and greater political representation than traditional representative democracy. Some scholars argue for refocusing the term on community-based activity within the domain of civil society , based on the belief that a strong non-governmental public sphere is a precondition for the emergence of a strong liberal democracy.

Thoroughly revised and updated in this fifth edition, Political Sociology: Power and Participation in the Modern World illustrates the broad social bases of politics and also shows how politics and governmental actions can influence the fate of nations and their citizens. Providing insight into recent political sociological theories, Anthony M. Orum and new coauthor John G. Dale help students make sense of the many major social and political changes taking place in the world today. They examine such timely topics as the economy and politics, states and societies, civil society and politics, basic forms of political rule, power and equality in modern America, political parties, and citizen participation.
