Whiteness of a different color: European immigrants and the alchemy of race

Patricia Williams is a lawyer and a professor of commercial law, the great-great-granddaughter of a slave and a white southern lawyer. The Alchemy of Race and Rights is an eloquent autobiographical essay in which the author reflects on the intersection of race, gender, and class. Using the tools of critical literary and legal theory, she sets out her views of contemporary popular culture and current events, from Howard Beach to homelessness, from Tawana Brawley to the law-school classroom, from civil rights to Oprah Winfrey, from Bernhard Goetz to Mary Beth Whitehead.

Taking up the metaphor of alchemy, Williams casts the law as a mythological text in which the powers of commerce and the Constitution, wealth and poverty, sanity and insanity, wage war across complex and overlapping boundaries of discourse. In deliberately transgressing such boundaries, she pursues a path toward racial justice that is, ultimately, transformative.

Williams gets to the roots of racism not by finger-pointing but by much gentler methods. Only by such an inquiry and such patient phenomenology can we understand racism. The book is deeply moving and not so, finally, just because racism is wrong—we all know that. This Williams enables us to see.

The result is a testament of considerable beauty, a triumph of moral tactfulness. The result, as the title suggests, is magic. While astronomer Vera Rubin made significant contributions to our understanding of dark matter and championed the advancement of women in science, she is not that well known outside of the scientific community.

Biography While legal decisionmakers may not consciously endorse white supremacy, legal discourse itself masks how biography shapes their acts of judgment and their application of legal ideals. For Williams and other critical race theorists, this form of interrogation is the continuing legacy of the Civil Rights movements. Most scholars and critics know Patricia Williams as a critical race theorist who examines how law unconsciously reflects and creates racial difference. By illustrating the homologies, affinities, and similarities between Williams's work and postcolonial theory, I hope to provide a new framework in which to understand critical race theory.

The priests were masters of the Word and, within the City, ascending levels ofpower and treasure became accessible to those who could learn ascendingly intricate levels of Word Magic. At the very top level, the priests became gods; and because they then had nothing left to seek, they engaged in games with which to pass the long hours ofeternity. In particular, they liked to ride their strong, sure-footed steeds around and around the perimeter ofheaven: now jumping word hurdles, now playing polo with concepts ofthe moon and the Excluding Voices stars, now reaching up to touch that pinnacle, that splinter of Refined Understanding called Superstanding, which was the brass ring of their merry-go-round. A Necklace of Thoughts on In time, some of the priests-turned-gods tired of this sport, denounced it the Ideology of Style as meaningless. They donned the garb ofpilgrims, seekers once more, and passed beyond the gates of the Celestial City.
