He was the leading French Protestant reformer and the most important figure in the second generation of the Protestant Reformation. His interpretation of Christianity , advanced above all in his Institutio Christianae religionis but elaborated in later editions; Institutes of the Christian Religion , and the institutional and social patterns he worked out for Geneva deeply influenced Protestantism elsewhere in Europe and in North America. The Calvinist form of Protestantism is widely thought to have had a major impact on the formation of the modern world. John Calvin is known for his influential Institutes of the Christian Religion , which was the first systematic theological treatise of the reform movement. He stressed the doctrine of predestination , and his interpretations of Christian teachings, known as Calvinism , are characteristic of Reformed churches.
Louis Bouyer examines the underlying principles and teachings of the 16 th century Protestant reformers. These topics include Scripture alone as source of Christian belief, justification by faith alone, God's free gift of unmerited salvation, the sovereignty of God, and the Christian responsibility toward good works. He also presents certain problematic areas of Protestant thought, such as the denial of the efficacy of the sacraments, a conflict between various interpretations of Scripture and the Tradition of the Church, and the rejection of Church authority. He then shows how these same principles gradually weakened the various forms of Protestantism, while, at the same time, provided impetus for later reforms and renewals. Written in , The Spirit and Forms of Protestantism by Louis Bouyer still challenges both Catholics and Protestants to better understand the issues that both separate and unite them. Louis Bouyer was born to a Parisian Protestant family and was ordained as a Lutheran pastor at age He converted to Catholicism in and was ordained a priest for the Oratory in
Christianity is an Abrahamic monotheistic religion based on the life and teachings of Jesus of Nazareth. Its adherents, known as Christians , believe that Jesus is the Christ , whose coming as the Messiah was prophesied in the Hebrew Bible — the textual basis for the Old Testament in Christianity — and chronicled in the New Testament. Christianity remains culturally diverse in its Western and Eastern branches , as well as in its doctrines concerning justification and the nature of salvation , ecclesiology , ordination , and Christology. Their creeds generally hold in common Jesus as the Son of God —the Logos incarnated —who ministered , suffered , and died on a cross , but rose from the dead for the salvation of mankind; this is referred to as the gospel , meaning the "good news". Describing Jesus' life and teachings are the four canonical gospels of Matthew , Mark , Luke and John , with the Old Testament as the gospel's respected background.

Max Weber's The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism is a study of the relationship between the ethics of ascetic Protestantism and the emergence of the spirit of modern capitalism. Weber argues that the religious ideas of groups such as the Calvinists played a role in creating the capitalistic spirit. Weber first observes a correlation between being Protestant and being involved in business, and declares his intent to explore religion as a potential cause of the modern economic conditions. He argues that the modern spirit of capitalism sees profit as an end in itself, and pursuing profit as virtuous. Weber's goal is to understand the source of this spirit.

Calvinism also called the Reformed tradition , Reformed Christianity , Reformed Protestantism , or the Reformed faith is a major branch of Protestantism that follows the theological tradition and forms of Christian practice set down by John Calvin and other Reformation-era theologians. Calvinists broke from the Roman Catholic Church in the 16th century. Calvinists differ from Lutherans another major branch of the Reformation on the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist , theories of worship , the purpose and meaning of baptism, and the use of God's law for believers , among other things. His followers were instantly labeled Zwinglians , consistent with the Catholic practice of naming heresy after its founder. The namesake of the movement, French reformer John Calvin, renounced Roman Catholicism and embraced Protestant views in the late s or early s, as the earliest notions of later Reformed tradition were already espoused by Huldrych Zwingli.
