It seems that you're in Germany. We have a dedicated site for Germany. Research in music is a multidisciplinary matter. Experts from very different fields in science report the most recent data from their own research and thereby show today's knowledge concerning music and neuropsychological sciences. This includes the developing and adult brain, neurological and psychiatric diseases as well as the battery of the most recent development in brain imaging techniques. This book offers an excellent introduction to new scientific efforts in understanding both neuronal and psychic mechanisms when listening to or performing music.

Music and the Brain

Why do people listen to music? Over the past several decades, scholars have proposed numerous functions that listening to music might fulfill. However, different theoretical approaches, different methods, and different samples have left a heterogeneous picture regarding the number and nature of musical functions. Moreover, there remains no agreement about the underlying dimensions of these functions. Part one of the paper reviews the research contributions that have explicitly referred to musical functions. It is concluded that a comprehensive investigation addressing the basic dimensions underlying the plethora of functions of music listening is warranted. Part two of the paper presents an empirical investigation of hundreds of functions that could be extracted from the reviewed contributions.

This course is called Music and the Brain, and I bought this course because I was interested in how the human brain functions when it is listening to music or performing music. But the course seldom discusses that question.

The Musical Mind, published in , was written by the relatively unknown John Sloboda. It made ground-breaking inroads in raising crucial questions relating to music's status as a form of human expression and has become the seminal text in the field of music psychology. The scope of that book was impressive: from music perception to production, embracing topics as diverse as music's origin and the circumstances that encourage its skill acquisition. Musical structure, grouping, and perceptual processing, including memory, were key areas where John Sloboda had made early empirical investigatio
