One of the most important theoretical challenges facing us is developing a viable alternative to capitalism.

Marx’s Concept of Socialism

Commodities are objects that satisfy human needs and wants. Commodities are the fundamental units of capitalism, a form of economy based on the intense accumulation of such objects. This usefulness is its use-value, a property intrinsic to the commodity. Commodities also possess an exchange-value, the relative value of a commodity in relation to other commodities in an exchange situation. Unlike use-value, exchange-value is not intrinsic to a commodity.

The ideas expressed in the essay have a thorough economic contemplation about them as Marx put aside his materialist conceptions of history for the time being. Main topics examined in the essay include labour power , labour, and how labour power becomes a commodity. The labour theory of value is introduced, which distinguishes between labour and labour power. The essay defines the term commodity and explores how the economic principles of supply and demand affect the pricing of certain commodities. Beyond that, the essay explores how capital and capitalism do not service any purpose other than to gain more of it, which Marx presents as an illogical method of living one's life. Thus, "Wage-Labor and Capital" is considered by Marxists as an "in-depth economic and scientific observation on how capitalist economy works, why it was exploitative, and ultimately why it would eventually implode from within". The first question that Marx takes up in this text is the issue of the origins and determination of wages. He begins by evoking a simple scenario in which a worker is asked where his or her wages come from. Marx notes that when confronted with such a question a worker will simply reply by noting how much money they receive from their employer at each given day. Marx notes that this gives the impression that the employer is buying their labor, an abstract substance, with money, while the employee is simply selling their labor in exchange for money. Instead, what the employer is doing is buying labor power , which is put to use by the capitalist for a given period of time. But the capitalist could have used the money that he is paying the worker to buy some other commodity; this makes labor power substitutable for those alternative things that the capitalist could have spent his or her money on. Marx goes on to reiterate the analysis of alienation as formulated in the Paris Manuscripts of , where the analysis of estrangement ad alineation comes from see 1.
