There is a shared set of beliefs about human nature that shapes the way we see the world- common assumptions about race, aggression, and sex that are seen as just part of being human. While we might not always admit it in public, most people think that there is a specific set of biological differences between various kinds of people in the world, and that if you strip away society and laws, humans become beasts, with survival of the fittest and the bigger, badder, more aggressive taking control. And of course, nearly everyone knows that it is natural that men and women want, and need, different things from sex and personal relationships. These beliefs are myths based on misinformation, partial truths, and a large dose of ignorance as to what we actually know about our species. This book is focused on challenging what many people assume is common knowledge about what it means to be human. We are going to use information from a wide range of researchers and research projects to bust these myths and replace them with more accurate stories about who we are and what we do.

By appointment. Fuentes is an anthropologist whose research focuses on the biosocial, delving into the entanglement of biological systems with the social and cultural lives of humans, our ancestors, and a few of the other animals with whom humanity shares close relations. From chasing monkeys in jungles and cities, to exploring the lives of our evolutionary ancestors, to examining human health, behavior, and diversity across the globe, Professor Fuentes is interested in both the big questions and the small details of what makes humans and our close relations tick. His current projects include exploring cooperation, creativity, and belief in human evolution, multispecies anthropologies, evolutionary theory and processes, and engaging race and racism. Fuentes is an active public scientist, a well-known blogger, lecturer, tweeter, and an explorer for National Geographic. Fuentes, A. Dore, K.

Alternative Masculinities for a Changing World pp Cite as. Even a cursory review of cross-cultural studies of men and masculinities could result in the depressing conclusion that men are dominant in most if not all societal spheres in most societies today and historically, and therefore that there must be something essentially human and even more fundamentally, something biological about unequal gender relations if there is such a common pattern. Yet the same comparative analysis that might persuade us to believe in the ubiquity of male supremacy can also, in the classic anthropological tradition of the negative instance, be inspiring and hopeful as we examine a myriad of exceptions in societies around the world today and in the past.

There are three major myths of human nature: humans are divided into biological races; humans are naturally aggressive; men and women are truly different in behavior, desires, and wiring. Tackling misconceptions about what race, aggression, and sex really mean for humans, Fuentes incorporates an accessible understanding of culture, genetics, and evolution requiring us to dispose of notions of "nature or nurture. A final chapter plus an appendix provide a set of take-home points on how readers can myth-bust on their own.

- Quien es.

Anthropology: Find Books & Videos
