The book is Jane Austen's second published novel. Its manuscript was first written between and , initially called First Impressions , but was never published under that title. Following revisions, it was first published on 28 January Like both its predecessors, Sense and Sensibility and Northanger Abbey , it was written in Steventon, Hampshire, where Austen lived in the rectory. The title of the book is taken from a sentence in Fanny Burney's Cecilia; Austen was a reader and admirer of Burney's novels.

First published in , Pride and Prejudice has consistently been Jane Austen's most popular novel. It portrays life in the genteel rural society of the day, and tells of the initial misunderstandings and later mutual enlightenment between Elizabeth Bennet whose liveliness and quick wit have often attracted readers and the haughty Darcy. The title Pride and Prejudice refers among other things to the ways in which Elizabeth and Darcy first view each other. The original version of the novel was written in under the title First Impressions , and was probably in the form of an exchange of letters.
