Globalization, Growth and Sustainability pp Cite as. Globalization is a new buzz word, a cliche, a new term to frighten the children. Its champions say that it has altered all economic relations, marginalized the nation state, given unregulated and highly mobile capital the upper hand over labor and over governments, and that it is ushering in a borderless world. Its detractors say that it is globaloney or globaldegook to say these things. Globalization is not new: it is merely a throwback to the nineteenth century or, indeed, merely another chapter in the saga of the world systems built up by capitalism since the fifteenth century. A characteristic of the present global ecological situation is increasing instability or— put another way—a crisis in the civilization system, the global scale of which is expressed through a deterioration of human and animal habitats. With growing population size the problems of providing people with food and improving their living conditions in many regions will not only not be resolved but will become even more urgent. Any possible benefit from decrease in per capita consumption as a result of increased efficiency of technologies will be outweighed by the impact of such a growth in population size. As civilization has developed, so the problem of predicting the scale of expected climate change and associated change in human habitats has become more urgent. The process of globalization is connected also with environmental degradation, which is now extended as a concept of threat and security, considered individually and in connection.

The growing public concern that private corporations should not only earn reasonable profits and provide fair returns to shareholders, but also operate as good corporate citizens and socially responsible organizations, has spread to the largest transnational corporations TNCs , and seems to have been taken up by companies in both richer and poorer countries.
