Pore Structure of Cement-Based Materials provides a thorough treatment of the experimental techniques used to characterize the pore structure of materials. The text presents the principles and practical applications of the techniques used, organized in an easy-to-follow and uncomplicated manner, providing the theoretical background, the way to analyze experimental data, and the factors affecting the results. The book is the single comprehensive source of the techniques most commonly used for pore structure analysis, covering simple techniques like mercury intrusion porosimetry and water absorption, to the more sophisticated small-angle scattering and nuclear magnetic resonance. The book is an essential reference text for researchers, users, and students in materials science, applied physics, and civil engineering, who seek a deep understanding of the principles and limitations of the techniques used for pore structure analysis of cement-based materials.

Fluid Permeability of Ground Steel Slag-Blended Composites Evaluated by Pore Structure

Carbon nano tubes CNT has been introduced as an efficient nanomaterial in order to improve the mechanical and durability properties of concrete. The effect of CNT on the microstructures of cementitious materials has been widely reported. This paper combines a critical review on the effect of CNTon the pore and microstructure of cement composite with a discussion on the porosity measurement of pastes containing CNT using mercury intrusion porosimetry techniques MIP. In this scope, this review paper involves analyzing the effect of CNT on the microstructure and the pore structure of cementitious materials. The existing methods of measuring the porosity of cementitious material are reviewed, in particular, the contact angle measurement is discussed in detail in which the most effective parameters and possible errors of calculation is presented.

Concrete is a composite material that consists of a binding medium and aggregate particles and can be formed in several types. It may be considered to consist of three phases: a cement paste, the aggregate, and the interfacial transition zone ITZ between them. In addition to ordinary Portland cement, the essential components of the base of concrete are aggregates and water. For practical requirements, additives and admixtures can be added to these raw materials to improve some desirable characteristics. Inclusion of additives individually or in combination helped in improving the strength and durability of concrete mixes due to the additional reduction in porosity of cement paste and an improved interface between it and the aggregate.

Mercury intrusion porosimetry MIP is questioned for possibly damaging the micro structure of cement-based materials CBMs , but this theme still has a lack of quantitative evidence. By using X-ray computed tomography XCT , this study reported an experimental investigation on probing the pore structure damages in paste and mortar samples after a standard MIP test. XCT scans were performed on the samples before and after mercury intrusion. Because of its very high mass attenuation coefficient, mercury can greatly enhance the contrast of XCT images, paving a path to probe the same pores with and without mercury fillings. The paste and mortar showed the different MIP pore size distributions but similar intrusion processes. A grey value inverse for the pores and material skeletons before and after MIP was found.
