This authoritative guide provides a basis for understanding the emerging technology of ground source heating and cooling. It equips engineers, geologists, architects, planners and regulators with the fundamental skills needed to manipulate the ground's huge capacity to store, supply and receive heat, and to implement technologies such as heat pumps to exploit that capacity for space heating and cooling. The author has geared the book towards understanding ground source heating and cooling from the ground side the geological aspects , rather than solely the building aspects.

He explains the science behind thermogeology and offers practical guidance on different design options. An Introduction to Thermogeology: ground source heating and cooling is aimed primarily at professionals whose skill areas impinge on the emerging technology of ground source heating and cooling. They will be aware of the importance of the technology and wish to rapidly acquire fundamental theoretical understanding and design skills.

This second edition has been thoroughly updated and expanded to cover new technical developments and now includes end-of-chapter study questions to test the reader's understanding. A vid R eaders. An Introduction to Thermogeology.

I leaned over the railing, looking down. I always thought, I had a fatal disease or something, knew it was gonna do me soon, I was gonna take a whole lot of motherfuckers along for the ride, you know. I could just go into the Zero, be done with it. Piano music, loud voices, drunken singing, and an occasional angry curse testified to the liveliness within. The hitch rail was lined end to end. He drew rein well back from a square of light spilling from a window and dismounted. Removing his spurs, he slid them into his saddlebags, then shucked the Spencer and crept to the back door.

Conditions for shallow geothermal energy utilization in Dinaric karst terrains in Croatia

An Introduction to Thermogeology. Ground Source Heating and Cooling

A heat pump is a device that transfers heat energy from a source of heat to what is called a thermal reservoir. Heat pumps move thermal energy in the opposite direction of spontaneous heat transfer , by absorbing heat from a cold space and releasing it to a warmer one. A heat pump uses external power to accomplish the work of transferring energy from the heat source to the heat sink. The heat transfer medium circulated through these components is called refrigerant. While air conditioners and freezers are familiar examples of devices that use heat pumps, heat pumps are also used in heating, ventilating, and air conditioning HVAC devices used for space heating or space cooling. Heat pumps usually can be used either in heating mode or cooling mode, as required by the user. When a heat pump is used for heating, it employs the same basic refrigeration-type cycle used by an air conditioner or a refrigerator, but in the opposite direction — releasing heat into the conditioned space rather than the surrounding environment.

Hydrogeological and thermogeological properties of the shallow subsurface in the Dinaric karst area of Croatia were investigated in the context of its utilization for ground- and water-source heat pumps GSHPs and WSHPs. It was determined that rock thermal conductivities are favourable for GSHP utilization, but dependent on the wider rock mass characteristics which are hard to predict size of karst voids and their saturation status. In addition, wells with high enough yield and stabile seawater or groundwater temperatures for WSHP utilization can be designed in appropriate structural settings tensional fractures and fracture set intersections. Advantages and disadvantages of the utilized methodology have been pointed out, as well as methods which should prove useful in the future, especially if larger systems are planned.

In this research, optimum design of a combined solar collector, geothermal heat pump and thermal seasonal storage system for heating and cooling a sample greenhouse is studied. In order to optimize the system from technical point of view some new control strategies and functions resulting from important TRNSYS output diagrams are presented. Temperatures of ground, rock bed storage, outlet ground heat exchanger fluid and entering fluid to the evaporator specify our strategies. Optimal heat storage is done with maximum efficiency and minimum loss. Mean seasonal heating and cooling COPs of 4. Furthermore, optimal parallel operation of the storage and the heat pump is studied by applying the same control strategies.
