Chinese herbal medicines CHMs have been widely used to promote health and treat illnesses in daily medical care throughout Asia while mostly accepted as an alternative medical method in many nations of the western world. CHM has a unique therapeutic effect to reduce adverse effects on cancer patients caused by chemotherapy and surgery; however, we did not find any high-quality review for the claimed effects. In this review, we will summarize the history, basic theories and principles, and clinical applications of CHM for disorders, especially female cancers. Meta-analyses to evaluate the efficacy and safety of CHM in the treatment of ovarian cancer and breast cancer have been conducted. The results showed that combined CHMs and western medicines treatment CHM-WM had significantly relieved the symptoms and reduced the side effects after surgery and chemotherapy on both ovarian cancer and breast cancer. Traditional Chinese medicine TCM has a history that spans years and has been widely used to promote health and treat illnesses [ 1 ].

Traditional Chinese medicine TCM is an important part of primary health care in Asian countries that has utilized complex herbal formulations consisting 2 or more medicinal herbs for treating diseases over thousands of years. However, evidence to support these synergistic effects remains weak and controversial due to several reasons, including the very complex nature of CHM, misconceptions about synergy and methodological challenges to study design. In this review, we clarify the definition of synergy, identify common errors in synergy research and describe current methodological approaches to test for synergistic interaction. We discuss the strengths and weaknesses of these models in the context of CHM and summarize the current status of synergy research in CHM. There remain significant challenges in the development of suitable methods for synergistic studies of complex herbal combinations.

Margaret A. To the Editor: The study by Mr Bensoussan et al 1 demonstrated the effectiveness of Chinese herbal medicine CHM in treating irritable bowel syndrome IBS ; however, it did not explain the possible pharmacological actions of the herbs involved. A multitarget theory proposed by Zhou 2 explains the actions of Chinese herbal formulas. Each formula, composed of multiple herbs, inherently contains multiple chemical components. Each active component, if used alone, usually enters the body at a level below that seen in therapeutic dosing.

A total of patients were diagnosed with breast cancer within the defined study period. After randomly equal matching, data from patients were analyzed. Hazard ratios of incidence rate of chronic hepatitis were used to determine the influence and therapeutic potential of CHM in patients with breast cancer. The patients with breast cancer receiving CHM treatment exhibited a significantly decreased incidence rate of chronic hepatitis even across the stratification of age, CCI score, and treatments. The cumulative incidence of chronic hepatitis for a period of seven years after initial breast cancer diagnosis was also reduced in the patients receiving CHM treatment.
